Hunter Biden has been found guilty by a Delaware jury on three felony gun charges.
It is the first time in U.S. history that a child of the President of the United States has been convicted of a felony.
Prosecutors spent the trial reviewing Biden’s past statements from his memoir and text messages. They told the jury that Biden was addicted to crack cocaine for years, including the year that Biden purchased a firearm.
In 2018, Biden purchased a gun and filled out the Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms form, 4473, which asks gun purchasers if they are using or are addicted to a controlled substance. Biden then owned the firearm for 11 days before Biden’s partner at the time, Hallie Biden, disposed of the gun.
Biden’s defense team said during the trial that the prosecution did not prove Biden he was on crack cocaine when he filled out the form or the days in which he owned the gun. They said Biden believed he was not addicted or using crack cocaine when he filled out the form and owned the gun.
Prosecutors called multiple witnesses to talk about Biden’s drug addiction, and one of them testified that Biden was using crack cocaine in November 2018, the month after the firearm was purchased.
Biden’s defense team is expected to appeal the verdict. Prior to the verdict, President Joe Biden said on ABC that he would not pardon his son if he was found guilty.
Biden faces another trial in September for alleged tax evasion.
